The Chef


Kelly McCown’s career has two foundations: great food and Napa Valley. As the executive chef at Goose & Gander in St. Helena, he’s now led the culinary program in the historic building for two entirely different restaurants – he was chef de cuisine there when it was the Michelin-starred Martini House – and won top notch accolades and passionate followings for them both.

Kelly started his career in some of San Francisco’s best kitchens such as La Folie, Fleur de Lys, and Hayes Street Grill, then moved to Seattle, working at some of the Pacific Northwest’s foremost restaurants, including the James Beard Foundation’s celebrated Flying Fish. He came back to Northern California in 1999, working at Wine Spectator’s Greystone Restaurant at the Culinary Institute of America, then went to work for master restaurateur Pat Kuleto and helped open Martini House, which won national awards including Esquire Magazine’s nod for top new restaurant in America and Bon Appetit’s “Best of 2002.”

In 2009, McCown joined the Selland family as executive chef at Ella Dining Room and Bar in Sacramento and was considered one of the best chefs in the region. But Napa called to him and when Goose & Gander opened at the site of the old Martini House in 2012, McCown was there as executive chef, creating a menu of rustic American classics that returned the spot to the list of Napa Valley stars for both tourists and locals.

Husband and wife team of Chef Randall Selland and Chef Nancy Zimmer, along with their grown children Josh Nelson and Tamera Baker, founded The Kitchen Restaurant in 1991. The family was among the first to emphasize “Farm-to-Fork” dining in the Sacramento region over twenty years ago. They’ve been building relationship and supporting local farmers, growers, ranchers and artisan producers since the inception of The Kitchen. The quality, commitment, and passion that the Selland family brings to The Kitchen have created a landmark restaurant that has sold out nightly for more than twenty years.

The Kitchen Restaurant has earned every imaginable local and regional award along with an impressive list of national accolades, including the AAA Five Diamond Award five years running, a nod as a semi-finalist for the James Beard “Outstanding Restaurant” Award, the highest Zagat ratings, and honors from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, as well as inclusion in the Yelp Top 100 and the Open Table Top 100.
